Leaving Home
Sooner or later, most young people start thinking about moving out to live somewhere else. Being a young carer can be a very important part of this. Perhaps you don’t feel you could ever move away because of your caring duties. Or, on the other hand, perhaps you’re feeling as though you need to escape as soon as possible!
Some tips and suggestions
- If you’re under 18, you often can’t sign the contract to start renting anywhere without an adult’s signature and you can’t take out a mortgage
- On the other hand, there might be options available for you that are specifically for young people. Many areas have "supported housing" schemes for young people
- You could also think about whether there’s anybody nearby who you could stay with for a bit, while you think things over or perhaps allow things to calm down a little. Lots of young people do this while still checking on the people they care for, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
- And if you’re looking for somewhere to live because you’re worried about your safety, your local council should at least make sure you’re safe as you’re still legally a child!
- For more tips, that also apply to young adults over 18 years old, visit our "Leaving home" page on Carers.org
Dannie (aged 19) says: "If you son’t understand what you’re being told by the housing people, ask them to say it in an easier way because they will try and throw big words at you and you can feel out of your depth! Remember it’s their job to help you so make sure you find out all the information you can because you’re entitled to it. If you feel you need a bit of support then ask a friend or family member to come along with you"
