What help can I get as a parent?

Social services won’t help me as a parent

Disabled Parents Network (DPN) is a national organisation of and for disabled people who are parents or who hope to become parents, and their families, friends and supporters.

“They said What?” is a useful booklet available from them which tells you in plain English what your rights are when faced with social workers saying things like:

  • “You can’t have a social worker from the adult team because you’ve already got one from the children and families team”
  • “A community care assessment will cover only the help that you need, it can’t cover help with child care”
  • “The care worker can wash only your clothes and not those of your child, as doing that wouldn’t be part of your personal care needs”

The Disabled Parents Network can also offer you advice and advocacy on their helpline: 08702 410 450 or visit their website: http://www.disabledparentsnetwork.org.uk/
