Learning disabilities

What is a learning disability?

“Learning disability” is the name given to lots of medical conditions like Down’s Syndrome and Autism.  Learning disability used to be called mental handicap. People get a learning disability when they are born or soon afterwards and it lasts for their whole life. You cannot catch it from another person. Some people with a learning disability have a physical disability as well that affects their body.

People with a learning disability find it harder to learn and understand than other people. So they might need help with everyday skills like getting dressed, cooking or having a conversation. If they get the right help, many people who have a learning disability learn and achieve a lot in life.

No one can catch any kind of learning disability – it is something you are born with.
