Stroke

Treatments

If someone is got to a hospital quickly then they may be given special drugs to help dissolve any blood clots that might be stopping blood supply getting to the brain. After this there are different medicines that can be given to someone who’s had a stroke to reduce the chances of them having another one. These might include drugs to lower someone’s blood pressure, or their cholesterol levels.

With some types of strokes, known as Haemorrhagic strokes, someone might need surgery to remove any blood from the brain and repair any burst blood vessels.

People might also be given advice from their doctor about reducing their risks of having another stroke by changing certain things about their lives. This could mean eating a more healthy diet, doing more exercise and reducing stress in their lives.

For many people who have had a stroke they may need to spend time in a type of hospital unit called a rehabilitation unit. This is where they can learn how to do some of the things that the stroke might have caused their brain to “forget”, such as walking, talking and eating. A specialist team of nurses and doctors will help them to learn how to do some of these things again as well as help them to cope with how the stroke has left them feeling.
