Dealing with feelings

Guilt

Many young people who look after someone in their family feel guilty from time to time. This might be because

  • You feel you can’t spend as much time as you want looking after someone.
  • You feel angry with the person you look after sometimes or wish they weren’t there.

These feelings are normal. Talking about them might make them feel better.  Remember:

  • You didn’t ask to be a young carer – it just happened to you.
  • You can’t be there for someone else 24 hours a day.
  • You can’t make the person you look after better – no matter how hard you try.

Sometimes you will feel angry with people that are close to you.
