    Documentary About Young Carers

    Hey All,

My name is Bekah, and i'm 18, been a young carer all my life, caring for my older sister Ashleigh :)

Im currently at college, studying Television, and i have to come up with a 5 minute documentary, and i thought Young Carers was a great topic to do it on.

I'm wanting it a happy documentary, like what are the good points about being a young carer? Because arent you sick of always seeing the sad depressing stories on TV these days? making the documentary from the happier side, will show people that we arent different, that we should be treated the same, but let them also understand that life is sometimes hard and we may not be able to do our homework, or may come to school late, any thoughts or ideas would be great.

     Thanks.

Not sure what ideas I could give you but just wanted to let you know your idea is great, I totally agree...things aren't doom and gloom. For most people caring for someone there is a bond there that many other people may not have so I think that is something special about being a carer...there for the good times and the bad Smile. Re: Documentary About Young Carers

i have a couple of quotes, for numerous Young Carers, anyone else have any other positive things about Young Carers?

I asked a bunch of Young Carers From All Over Scotland

"What is the best things about being a Young Carer?"

"its hard being a young carer but it has its advantages, there are groups that help you,

with the help from young carers group you get out the house more, you get to do many things that wouldn't have time to do.

Each Young Carer has a different story, no Young Carer is in the exact same situation, but each Young Carer understand each other's pain.

Thank to Young Carers Group, I have became more responsible and mature.

I have gained friendships, with people who are not like me, but we have alot in common.

You get an early start at life, as maturity and responsibilites go.

    (Stefanos, Edinburgh, 17)

"You can get firsthand experience of how caring for someone is like for when you start a family

and its rewarding to know that yours helping someone you love"

    (Shirin, Glasgow, 14)

"The Best thing about being a Young Carer is... everything. the only difference between a sibling you care for and one you dont is that

you spend more time looking after the one you care for more often. you can still have fun

with the person you care for, because you dont know what it would be like if you didnt care for them."

    (Natasha, Glasgow, 18)

I think that being a yc has actually made me a better person,

its allowed me to learn a way of life many people don't experience and i think its made me want

to help others, through voluntary work and paid work and given me the chances of those

experiances. I don't mean it in the sense that u ave to be a yc to want to help others but

i just personally think its openeed my eyes up to others needs, and yh i have days wen i sit

in my pjs on sofa, watchin tv with ice cream felin sorry for myself, but in general it mkes me

jsut pik myself up and say 'i can change the things that mke me unhappy in my life, my sis can't

    change her life'.

    (Zoe, Aberdeenshire, 15)

"Meeting new people that are in the same situation you're in and they understand fully on how

    you feel."

    (Stephen, Glasgow, 18)

    any ideas guys?

    xx
